Welcome to Medical Weight Loss of the Lowcountry. Our goal is to help each client achieve a healthy weight through a comprehensive and medically sound program of weight loss.

By attaining, and maintaining, a healthy weight you can dramatically reduce your risks for heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, and certain cancers. In addition, you will find that the quality of your life will improve tremendously in the form of improved energy, self-esteem, and confidence.

Because you will see a board certified physician at each of your visits, our goal is to improve your health and help you to achieve a healthier weight. Our philosophy goes far beyond helping you reach a number on a scale. We will individualize a program that is targeted at having you lose body fat while maintaining lean body mass with measurements of these at each visit.

You can expect to lose 1 to 4 pounds per week during the highly structured Weight Reduction phase of our program which lasts 12 weeks. This loss is enough for significant health benefits to most clients, though some may desire to continue in the weight reduction phase for more prolonged periods. After the Weight Reduction phase, you then will enter the Weight Maintenance program to be given the tools to keep the weight off or continue a more gradual weight loss.

The 12 week program begins once you have had your initial visit. This initial visit includes a comprehensive assessment of how you attained your current weight and what your weight loss goals are. You will receive a history and physical by the doctor, a cardiac evaluation including risk factor assessment and EKG, extensive fasting lab work, and biometric evaluation of your weight, body mass index, percent body fat, percent muscle mass, total body water, and basal energy expenditure.

Weight loss is achieved through a structured program that includes diet, exercise and, when appropriate, prescription drug management. The diet most often involves a Low Calorie Diet that involves meal replacements and shakes but allows you to eat a healthy balance of foods you enjoy with a strong emphasis on fruits and vegetables. There is also a Very Low Calorie Diet option requiring more extensive and frequent lab testing for those requiring more rapid weight loss. With either diet, you will need to track your daily caloric intake and will have a weekly one on one assessment and review with the doctor.
The exercise portion of the program sets a goal of burning at least 2000 calories a week through aerobic training. It involves an emphasis on Non-Exercise Aerobic Training (NEAT) which means you can achieve this doing activities you may already be engaged in such as walking up stairs, doing yard work, or going on walks or bicycle rides. We also encourage weight training to build muscle mass which will help raise your metabolic rate and burn more daily calories. You will track your daily physical activity to record how many calories you burn.

Many folks also find it helpful to use prescription drugs to help achieve their weight or maintain their weight. Your initial assessment will include evaluation for weight reduction medicines. The doctor will also assess all of your medications as many people are not aware that certain prescriptions may be contributing to their weight gain (or could be changed to assist in their weight loss). In these instances, we would make recommendations in consultation with the physician who is prescribing those medicines.

This medically sound program will help you achieve a healthier weight and a healthier life. Your motivation comes from your own success. START TODAY.
